It is hard today to appreciate the shock that swept through British theatre when Ibsen’s play was first performed in London in the 1880s. To have a character dying of venereal disease and a wife walking out on her respectable but controlling husband, slamming the door...well!!! Too much for the Victorians, but perhaps really refreshing for our theatre.
