This short novel by Steinbeck draws on his own personal experience of working on the land in his native California. In this little masterpiece he remembers the ‘hobos’, the travelling homeless workers, who picked up any jobs they could get and were often very badly treated on the farms where they took temporary hard labour. Out of his first-hand experience comes this classic about human loneliness and the necessity for kindness in the worst conditions.
