24th May to 28th May 2011 - 7.30pm, Saturday Matinee 2.30pm
Venue: Loughborough Town Hall
Set in New York City, the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a white working-class group. The two communities are thrown into turmoil when Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.
The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in musical theatre. Bernstein's score for the musical has become one of the greatest ever written; it includes "Something's Coming", "Maria", "America", "Somewhere", "Tonight", "I Feel Pretty", "A Boy Like That", "Gee, Officer Krupke" and "Cool".
A truly remarkable piece of musical theatre that captivates all who see it and leaves audiences mesmerized.
