George Eliot's Middlemarch is the crowning achievement of a woman who, from childhood, refused to be denied the world of male knowledge. We will look at this hugely moral lady whose 'scandalous' life led to her long period of social ostracism, and at a book which moved the genre of the novel into a whole new sphere.
