'The Woodlanders' by Thomas Hardy

One of the most poignant of all Hardy's novels, it explores the fate of a girl educated out of her class and taught to want a higher social status. The tragedy of her marriage and the consequences to all around her makes this one of the most troubling of all Hardy's works.
